NewCars-Data.com – Despite its captivating aesthetics, the BMW 8 Series family has found itself struggling to gain significant traction within its segment. Comprising coupe, convertible, and gran coupe models, the 8 Series was meticulously crafted to contend in the upper echelons of the luxury car market. However, its lofty price tag and a perceived lack of versatility have posed considerable obstacles to its market success.
The BMW 8 Series’ formidable presence on the road, marked by its sleek design and advanced technology, has garnered acclaim among enthusiasts and critics alike. Despite these accolades, the model has faced challenges in establishing itself as a formidable competitor in the luxury car segment. The prohibitive cost associated with the 8 Series has been a deterrent for many potential buyers, placing it out of reach for a broader consumer base.

Moreover, the 8 Series’ relatively limited versatility in comparison to some of its competitors has added to its struggles. While the coupe, convertible, and gran coupe models offer a diverse range of options, the market demands a level of adaptability that the 8 Series has struggled to deliver. This lack of flexibility has hindered its appeal among consumers seeking a luxury vehicle that seamlessly blends performance with practicality.
Rumors surrounding the potential discontinuation of the 8 Series began circulating a few years ago, casting doubt on the model’s future. Automobile Magazine even reported that only the 8 Series Gran Coupe would survive this speculated overhaul. The industry was abuzz with discussions about the challenges faced by the 8 Series and its uncertain fate within the BMW lineup.
However, amid the uncertainty, whispers of a potential electric 8 Series emerged, suggesting that BMW was exploring innovative solutions to rejuvenate the model’s appeal. The shift towards electric vehicles in the automotive industry prompted speculation that an electric variant could inject new life into the 8 Series, aligning it with the growing trend towards sustainable and eco-friendly mobility.
A new 8 Series, codename G77
This week, a fresh rumor emerged from the BMW community. A new 8 Series, codename G77, based on the CLAR flexible architecture, is reportedly in the works for BMW. The next X3, X5, and the combustion-powered 3 Series cars will all ride on this similar platform. It’s not known if the Gran Coupe model’s codename is G77. Naturally, this strategy also leaves room for an 8 Series that is exclusively electric. Furthermore, this vehicle will undoubtedly be added to the all-electric Neue Klasse platform if it receives approval in Munich.
But things are not clear yet, long time ago, a January 2022 story by German journalist Georg Kacher said that the existing BMW 4 Series and 8 Series models would combine to form the BMW 6 Series, which may be considered an older family depending on your point of view. Moreover, Kacher revealed that a new range of cars built on the Neue Klasse platform may be part of the reintroduction of the legendary 6 Series in 2026. Additionally, he said that the Gran Coupe model, which is the only surviving 8 Series model, will reportedly be included to the 7 Series roster in the future.
It remains to be seen whether the rebranding will happen. However, there is a good chance that the model will resemble the 8 Series. Furthermore, if we were a bookmaker, we would wager on an 8 Series Gran Coupe.
Available in late 2025
The rumored BMW 8 Series (G77) is expected to go on sale in late 2025, during the course of the seven-year BMW production cycle. As always, you ought to be skeptical of all these rumors. Until the first prototypes are driven, anyway. Stay tuned to our site, we will make sure you’re the first to know if BMW releases official information regarding The next 8 Series.
